Biography

Charlynn Small, PhD, LCP, CEDS-C is Assistant Director of Health Promotion, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at the University of Richmond in Virginia. She is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences, advocating for the awareness and treatment of eating disorders affecting Black women and underrepresented groups. She received her PhD from Howard University’s School of Education. Dr. Small is President of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals Foundation (iaedp™). She co-founded the Foundation’s African-American Eating Disorders Professionals (AAEDP) Committee. She has also served on the Advisory Board for the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). Dr. Small is Co-Founder and Principal of the Institute for Antiracism and Equity in Mental Health. She is Co-Editor of Treating Black Women with Eating Disorders: A Clinician’s Guide, Routledge, Taylor & Francis (2021) and Co-Editor of AntiBlackness and the Stories of Authentic Allies: Lived Experiences in the Fight Against Institutional Racism, Oxford University Press (9/10/24 release). Dr. Small is also co-author of Black Women, Their Bodies, and Food: A Clinician’s Guide to Understanding and Treating Disordered Eating, W.W. Norton & Company (2025).
