Binge Eating Treatment: Yes, Insurance DOES Cover it

Eating disorders, like other mental illnesses, are often stigmatized. This can cause people with binge eating disorder (BED) and other eating disorders to feel a great deal of shame. Shame and secretiveness can keep people from talking about their problems — and keep them from reaching out for help.
If you have binge eating disorder, it does not mean you lack self-control. It means that you suffer from a mental illness that requires specialized therapeutic care. There is no shame in having BED and there is no shame in seeking professional help.
Since binge eating disorder is a serious illness, many health insurance policies DO cover binge eating treatment.
Help for binge eating disorder
Binge eating disorder is defined as bouts of overeating accompanied by feelings of distress and loss of control. In 2013, binge eating disorder was acknowledged as a separate and distinct eating disorder when it was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V).
This change was good news to the millions of people suffering with binge eating disorder. Now, like those who struggle with anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders, those who struggle with binge eating can get the help that they need. And they can take advantage of health insurance to get the best treatment available.
If your insurance is mandated to offer Essential Health Benefits (EHB), you are eligible to get effective treatment for binge eating.
