This training will review key considerations for how dietitians can provide affirming and appropriate care to transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals with eating disorders. While many are now aware that transgender and nonbinary people experience increased rates of eating disorders compared to the general population, there is a deficit of trans-informed eating disorder care professionals. And as with many intersex health concerns, there is a paucity of research on intersex people with eating disorders and an even greater lack of providers who can account for and adequately support their needs. This presentation will address the role of the dietitian in gender affirming clinical care and how dietitians can communicate and collaborate with the multidisciplinary care team to ensure their clients receive unbiased, affirming care.

Educational Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to…

  • Describe causes of eating disorders in trans & intersex communities and how they can function as coping mechanisms
  • Discuss barriers to ED care for trans & intersex individuals and how their needs are not met by existing care structures
  • Identify strategies to create a safe and affirming practice for trans & intersex folx
